O'Neal impressed with Cavs' roster -- on paper

That would include the 2000 Lakers, when O'Neal and Kobe Bryant led Los Angeles a 67-15 record and a title.

The Cavaliers won 66 games last season, but lost to Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals. O'Neal says he likes having inside players like Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao with him, along with shooters LeBron James and Mo Williams.

"It's probably the best team I've ever played on, on paper anyway," O'Neal said Thursday. "I've always been on management to get me the power forward I've needed and the shooters I've needed."

To prepare for this season, O'Neal has taken up a new sport -- yoga. His first lesson was Wednesday night.

Lawmakers join Obama for game of hoops at White House

President Barack Obama and a few members of his Cabinet played basketball Thursday night at the White House with a handful of House members, two of them Republicans.

"We ran into a president with some serious game," said Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash.

Obama had "a sweet crossover move" and appeared to be in great shape, Inslee said. "He put a real nice move on me and beat me along the base line."

On the president's team were Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan. Also playing with Obama was his personal assistant, Reggie Love, once a forward for the Duke Blue Devils.

The game was closed to the press. Expected on the House side were Democrats Mike Arcuri of New York, John Boccieri of Ohio, Brad Ellsworth and Baron Hill of Indiana, Inslee and Rick Larsen of Washington state, Frank Kratovil of Maryland, Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania and Heath Shuler of North Carolina. Republicans invited to play were Jeff Flake of Arizona and John Shimkus of Illinois.

After playing with Obama, Inslee said, "I'm glad we could take his mind off the turmoil in the world for an hour and a half."

Earlier in the day, reporters asked White House press secretary Robert Gibbs why no women were invited to play, a point Gibbs called "well taken."

"The president, obviously, is someone who, as the father of two young daughters, has an avid interest in their competing against anybody on the playing field" Gibbs said. "The president's certainly played basketball and other sports with women in the past, and I anticipate he'll do so in the future."

He admitted there were weaknesses in the defense while trying to fight beruji Pelita Jaya Esia in Britama Arena Sports Mall Kelapa Gading, Tuesday. "In addition, transition offense-defense and vice versa is also not smooth. But, we are confident will get the chemistry at the gym later, "he said.

Class is in session

NBA Media Day is kind of like the first day of school. There are new kids in class (Allen Iverson and Zach Randolph), there are the returning big men on campus (Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo) and a teacher (Lionel Hollins) who is charged with making sure that he helps the students reach their potential (2010 NBA Playoffs?).

Players are eager to get back to the basketball classroom (training camp) to tell everyone about their summer vacations (Rudy and O.J. at Team U.S.A Camp, Hasheem Thabeet’s experience at the 2009 NBA Draft).

Surprisingly, a member of the Memphis media even offered up a pop quiz on the first day asking Iverson who will get the last shot on the team as the very first question of media day.

“Whoever the coach draws the play up for,” said Iverson.

An A+ for the Hall-of-Famer on his first day.

For his part, Randolph, who did his media availability in tandem with Iverson, also did his homework and dispelled one prevailing thought that with all the offensive firepower on the Grizzlies roster this season that there might not be enough basketballs to go around.

“It’s all going to be good,” Randolph said in reaction to how he and Iverson will fit in with the Grizzlies young nucleus. “We are going to work ourselves into the system. Coach is going to put us in the right spots to succeed.”

O.J. Mayo agreed that the notion that there can never be too much offensive firepower on a roster.

“The more scorers the more weapons,” said Mayo. “(Iverson and Randolph) will make it easier for everyone. If you are going to double team Rudy or shade on me, or double Z-Bo or AI it will just make our jobs easier. The easier our jobs are, the more successful we’ll be. A thumbs up to the organization for the work they did during the offseason.”

One Grizzlies mainstay who had an impressive offseason himself was Rudy Gay. Gay, who played off Mayo during their media availability pairing spent the offseason in the weight room and on the floor, gaining muscle and a few new moves that he is looking forward to debuting this season.

Gay noted that his experience along with Mayo at the Team U.S.A Men’s basketball mini-camp in particular was one of the most important parts of the summer for him.

“I think that it was important to see how hard the guys there like Andre Iguodala and Derrick Rose work,” said Gay. “From everything that they do on the court, to their diets. You see exactly what they put into the game. You have to put your all into on and off the court. It was definitely an eye opener for me.”

The Grizzlies are hoping to open the eyes of the their opponents this year, and the newest Grizzlies thinks that he’ll be able to bring something that he’s learned from his 13 years in the NBA that he’ll be able to pass on to his younger teammates.

“The most important thing for us is to believe in yourself, believe in your coaching staff and your teammates that you can turn it around,” said Iverson. “If you don’t, why are you even lacing your sneakers up.”

Looks like the newest Grizzlies player has let his teammate know that class is now in session.

Training Camp—Part Three

Everything in life, not just Twitter and Facebook, is about communication. Basketball is as much a mental and communication exercise as a sport. Lionel Hollins is trying to amp up the volume on his team’s on-court communication.

Regular readers of this space know that I have pointed out my admiration for the San Antonio Spurs if for no other reason than this—they play as a team. A major part of that isn’t just chemistry or the right combination of players on the floor.

The Spurs talk.

A lot.

They call out screens, warn teammates of switches and exhort their mates to work a little harder. One game last season against the Spurs was not televised, so I had the opportunity to listen to the floor chatter without the barrier of a headset.

It was a most enlightening evening, listening to the Spurs talk on defense, making sure that everyone was in a good defending position, never assuming that their teammate knew exactly what to do. And this is far from a brain-dead team.

The level of conversation among the Grizzlies was relatively muted and it showed in the defensive statistics.

Factor in the fact that few very players, okay, just two, were on the roster oh, just a couple of years ago and you’d be right to be concerned about cohesion and communication. The first day of practice, the Grizzlies seemed like a group of strangers just getting acquainted at a basketball camp.

By today (day 3 of camp), the Grizzlies were a chattering and chirping all over the floor. Energy was high and communication was at a high level on both ends of the floor. I asked Lionel Hollins if he had had a conversation with the team about the need for cooperative chatter and he attributed the team’s vocalness to their “growth as a team.” He also pointed out that “when you have a better understanding of where you are and what it is you’re doing, that allows you to talk a lot more too.”

Among the most vocal today: Zach Randolph and O.J. Mayo.

Training Camp - 10/1/2009 Morning Report

The morning session of Day Three of the 2009-10 Philadelphia 76ers Training Camp is in the books, and it featured a more balanced mix of offense and defense, including a five-on-five scrimmage.

The day started with a walk-through of more of the offense and the different options that can come from a particular set. Later in the day, the team reviewed inbounds plays, as well. There was a balance of defensive schemes, as well, including an emphasis placed on pick-and-roll defense.

There were a number of different line-ups used during the scrimmage, including some time for Rodney Carney and Marreese Speights on what was the first team - Lou Williams, Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Elton Brand and Sam Dalembert.

Because the team had a lot of scrimmaging and full-court activity during today's morning session, Head Coach Eddie Jordan indicated that tonight's session would focus on a lot of shooting.

Dalembert practiced today after being hit on his right shoulder during yesterday's single session. He will continue to be monitored.

IGUODALA: UNDERRATED
Among the posts being re-tweeted today is the following that comes from Basketball-Reference.com, on why Iguodala is one of the most underrated players in the NBA.

JONES-JENNINGS JOINING IN
The Sixers brought Rashad Jones-Jennings into camp yesterday after Stromile Swift went down with a hamstring strain, which has kept him off the court since Tuesday morning. However, Jones-Jennings had to wait until halfway through today's session to join practice as the Sixers needed clearance from FIBA to allow him to participate. Jones-Jennings participated in today's session.

HEAT To Retire Tim Hardaway’s No. 10

MIAMI, 9/17 – The Miami HEAT has announced that it will retire Tim Hardaway’s number 10 jersey in a pre-game ceremony prior to the team’s Oct. 28 season-opener against the New York Knicks. Hardaway will become just the second HEAT player to have his jersey retired, joining former teammate Alonzo Mourning whose number 33 jersey was retired on Mar. 30, 2009. The HEAT will honor Hardaway with a special pre-game video presentation and jersey retirement ceremony, where his jersey will be placed in the rafters alongside banners for Mourning and former team trainer Ron Culp and the HEAT’s division, conference, and NBA championship banners at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

"When you think about the Miami HEAT organization and the 20-plus years that the franchise has been in existence, there are always going to be those names that have helped develop the taproot and foundation for what we hope to be a long tradition of success here in Miami,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “Alonzo Mourning was one. His jersey now is hanging from the rafters in the AmericanAirlines Arena. Tim Hardaway is another, who today we are proud to announce will have his jersey retired on opening night against the New York Knicks. We feel that Tim has been one of those building blocks and one of those players who has done us proud and we feel he is most deserving of having this special honor on this particular night."

During a sparkling 13-year NBA career, Hardaway was a five-time NBA All-Star and earned All-NBA honors on five occasions (First Team once, Second Team three times and Third Team once). He became the first player in HEAT history to earn All-NBA honors when he was chosen First Team All-NBA after leading Miami to a franchise-record 61 wins and its first-ever conference finals appearance during the 1996-97 season. Hardaway, who was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1989-90, also captured a gold medal with the United States Senior National Team at the 2000 Olympics, where he teamed with Mourning, and also as a member of the 1994 U.S. World Championship team.

He appeared in 867 regular season games with the HEAT (1996-01), Golden State Warriors (1989-96), Dallas Mavericks (2001-02), Denver Nuggets (2002) and Indiana Pacers (2002-03) and averaged 17.7 points, 8.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.65 steals and 35.3 minutes while shooting 43.1 percent from the floor, 35.5 percent from three-point range and 78.2 percent from the foul line during his career. He finished his career with 15,373 points, 7,095 assists, 1,542 three-point field goals made and 1,428 steals. The Chicago native ranks among the NBA’s all-time leaders in three-point field goals attempted (4th), three-point field goals made (7th), assists (13th) and steals (39th). Additionally, in 56 postseason contests he averaged 16.8 points, 6.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 1.57 steals and 36.6 minutes while shooting 39.3 percent from the floor, 32 percent from three-point range and 75.1 percent from the foul line.

Originally selected with the 14th overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft by Golden State, Hardaway was acquired by the HEAT from the Warriors along with Chris Gatling on Feb. 22, 1996 in exchange for Bimbo Coles and Kevin Willis in one of the greatest trades in franchise history. He currently ranks as Miami’s all-time leader in assists (2,867), three-point field goals made (806) and three-point field goals attempted (2,263). Hardaway, who played collegiately at University of Texas-El Paso, also ranks among Miami’s all-time leaders in field goals attempted (4th-5,498), double-doubles (4th-95), points (5th-6,335), field goals made (5th-2,252), free throw percentage (5th-80.1%), steals (5th-541), double-figure scoring efforts (tied 5th-315), free throws made (7th-1,025), free throws attempted (8th-1,279), games started (8th-367), minutes played (8th-13,271), games played (10th-367), defensive rebounds (11th-1,004), total rebounds (13th-1,180), field goal percentage (16th-41.0%) and three-point field goal percentage (16th-35.6%). He also owns the HEAT single-season assist record, recording 695 during the 1996-97 campaign. Additionally, Hardaway ranks as the HEAT’s all-time postseason leader in three-point field goals made (80) and three-point field goals attempted (220).

The Miami HEAT is proud to welcome Assist-Card as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2009-10 season.

Houston's One-Two Punch

Houston - “We have to go best player and not be dogmatic about traditional position designations. Only $35MM on the floor to start year.”

- Rockets GM Daryl Morey via Twitter, September 18

That quote, perhaps more than any other, allows fans invaluable insight into the mindset possessed by the Houston Rockets’ staff as the team kicks off its training camp for the 2009-10 season. With go-to guys Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady on the shelf to begin the year, the coming campaign promises to be a grand basketball experiment of sorts, with plenty of positional shape-shifting sure to take place in the days and weeks to come.

But if any team is prepared to handle such a non-traditional approach to filling out the lineup card, surely the Rockets would be that club. After all, we’re talking about the same team which trotted out a 6-6 center (Chuck Hayes) against the largest frontline in the NBA (the Lakers’ trio of Andre Bynum, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol) for four games in May and still managed to come away with a 2-2 split and plenty of well-earned respect.

That sort of creative thinking borne of necessity was not merely limited to the painted area. Head Coach Rick Adelman also dabbled with a diminutive but lightning-quick backcourt pairing featuring fellow 6-footers Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry. The results were largely positive during the regular season, as the Rockets outscored opponents 161-148 (+8.8/48 minutes) during 71 minutes of play with that particular duo on the floor. And while that’s clearly not a combination Houston can employ all the time, the Brooks-Lowry pairing does speak to the Rockets’ willingness to put its most effective players on the court – regardless of whether or not they fit into the preconceived notions of what a traditional NBA lineup should look like.

“We’ve got two attacking people who can handle the ball and make plays,” says Adelman, while describing the benefits of having Brooks and Lowry on the floor together. “As long as Kyle can defend the two-guards, I think it’s a real tough situation for the other team to try to guard those two guys. It comes down defensively to how you are, so it just depends on the match-ups.”

As for the two players themselves, both Brooks and Lowry spent their summers working hard, knowing full well how much their team needs them to elevate their respective games. Lowry, especially, looks noticeably leaner without having sacrificed any of the strength which makes him such a foul-drawing dynamo when attacking the basket. He recognizes that Brooks has a leg up on the starter’s role but the Villanova product is conceding nothing at this point.

“I basically just put my time in; did extra work in the gym putting up shots and doing things to make myself better,” says Lowry. “I prepared myself for the long haul to make myself a high-powered player for our team.

“Me and Aaron are going to go out there and battle and Coach is going to make the decision on who’s best to be the starter. I think we both want that job and whatever happens, happens. We’ve both got to still go out there and help the team win.”

And it’s that final point which brings the conversation back to the prospect of seeing Brooks and Lowry on the floor at the same time. Regardless of who starts, both players will see plenty of on-court action, some of which will surely be simultaneous. The pairing is simply too tempting to dismiss; especially given the Rockets’ stated intention to push the pace and the fact that the two lightning bugs complement each other so well.

“Aaron’s a scorer and I’m a guy that does the intangible things,” explains Lowry. “So he can come off the ball and spot up, while I push the ball down the floor and make plays. We just play off each other very, very well.

“I think we make a good combination. And having a guy like Trevor (Ariza) running the wing with us - that’s a high-flying group right there.”

Their teammates see the duo’s potential as well. “I’ll tell you what,” begins Shane Battier. “When those guys play together, that’s a tough combo. They’re not the biggest but that’s a quick, tough match-up problem for a lot of teams.”

And, ultimately, that’s what Morey’s aforementioned tweet was all about: Playing the match-ups, finding creative solutions and utilizing this club’s versatility in such a way that the tables might be turned, transforming apparent weaknesses into strengths. It’s all part of the grand experiment; one in which Rocket science becomes its own unique form of alchemy attempting to turn two tiny point guards into a golden one-two punch.
